Pontoon boat - Large

Pontoon boat overview

A pontoon boat is a boat that has a hull that is constructed of round tubes known as "sponsons". The sponsons are attached to the bottom of the (generally) large deck at the outside edges of pontoon boats.

The deck of pontoon boats are generally large and flat, and is surrounded on all sides by a safety railing. The helm is found either in the center of the pontoon boat deck, or off to one of the sides.

Seating capacity varies in pontoon boats from around six for a small pontoon boat to twelve for the larger of the pontoon boats.

You can tow pontoon boats, but it requires special pontoon boat trailers to do so.

Advantages of pontoon boats

The pontoon boat is also often called a "party boat", and for good reason. Due to their large flat deck and seating capacity, it is not unusually to have lake parties on these boats.

Pontoons are easy to operate and economical to run, but can achieve speeds of up to 50 mph on calm water, making them fun to sport about in. Most pontoon boats have a good, smooth ride as well.

If you have a large family or like to have parties and invite lots of your water-loving friends over, pontoon boats can be a great investment. They are well suited for small lakes and rivers, and are great for fishing.

If properly converted, you can actually camp out on pontoon boats overnight. Click here to read a detailed article on the do's and don'ts of pontoon boat camping.

Disadvantages of pontoon boats

Pontoon boats are not good sea boats! Do not attempt to take them out into the open sea. They are stable, but when the waves grow beyond a foot or two, you will find that pontoon boats will flood and you might have your furniture washed out to sea!

What do pontoon boats cost?

Prices for pontoon boats generally range from $8,5000 to $30,000 with the motor installed, though you can find a few smaller paddle pontoons for around $1,000.
