Welcome!
Welcome to The Sherlock Holmes Chronicles! We hope you enjoy your time here.
All of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's wonderful, thrilling mysteries are available
here for you to read. Also, a different quote from Sherlock Holmes appears at the
top of these pages each time you reload a page.
Reading The Books
For a list of chapters/cases in a particular Sherlock Holmes book, click on the book title
to the left. From there you can go to specific chapters/cases, or you
can start at the first chapter and read on through the book (for chapter
books).
Now there are reference versions of each
Sherlock Holmes book available. The reference version has all words with more than four letters
hyperlinked to a search of the books for that word. So as you read you
can search all of the books for terms that interest you. For the
reference version of a chapter or case, just click the "reference version"
link on the Sherlock Holmes book's chapter list page. Reference version links also appear
in the search results. BE PATIENT - The reference versions take longer
to load.
Searching The Books
One feature of our site that few offer is the ability to search all of the
Sherlock Holmes books. Ever wonder in which book and case Sherlock Holmes
made that famous statement
"The game is afoot"?
He only said it once! Or perhaps you'd like to know how many times he
said "Elementary"? It's fewer
than you might think... Just enter your query in the search box to the
left and click "Search". Have fun!
Now you can search only the dialog appearing
in the text. This is great for finding quotable quotes from the various
characters in the Sherlock Holmes books. To search only quoted text
(dialog), after entering a query into the "Search The Books" form,
select "Search Quoted Text (Dialog)" from the drop-down list. If you are looking
for a specific quote, it's much better than doing a full-text search because
the quote search returns the entire quote, whereas the full-text search
just extracts portions of the text for display without regard to completeness.
Sherlock Holmes Literary Tools
I've added a concordance
of all words appearing in the Sherlock Holmes texts, with word counts.
UPDATE! You can now get statistical
analysis of all of the Sherlock Holmes books. See paragraph, sentence and word counts, dialog
versus narrative percentages and more. This can be very useful for anyone interesting
in writing fan-fiction if trying to stick closely to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's style.
ADDED 12/31/03 : Most favored nouns, adjectives and verbs (notice
Doyle's fascination with the "door", things that are "terrible" and "curious" as well as with
things that "stood".
I've added a People and
Places of Sherlock Holmes tool that will generate a list of all proper nouns
found in the Sherlock Holmes book you select. This can be useful if you're unsure of how to spell a
name or a place, but you know that it appears in the book and you want to do a search
on it. It also has other research and study uses.
Sherlock Holmes Media
There's now an image gallery
of Sherlock Holmes-related photos from old movie posters, publicity photos, old manuscripts
and other items and people of interest.
Future Additions
In the near future we hope to be adding PDF versions of all of the Sherlock Holmes books
